Review Guidelines

Help on how to use the online reviewing tool

The aim of the multi-stage review process, which is based on IPCC guidelines, is to ensure that the highest APCC quality standards are met during the preparation of the assessment report. The review management strives for a broad participation of the relevant research community and the general public. The reviewers are nominated by the Co-Chairs as well as by members of the APCC Steering Committee.

The reviewers should ensure in two stages that the report covers the relevant literature and scientific areas in a good breadth and that the report is an assessment of the current state of knowledge. Reviewers also assess the consistency and comprehensibility of the entire text and point out thematic gaps.

Before completing the Final Report, the review editors have the task of checking whether the comments received for the Second Order Draft have been taken into account by the author team. This means that they examine the authors’ answers to the reviewer comments, the justifications and also the revised text. The review editors can also ask the authors to “rework”. They represent a support for the authors when it comes to considering controversial comments in an appropriate form. This also happens in the context of a workshop or an online conference. Within the framework of AAR2, the review editors are already involved after commenting on the First Order Draft; they are in dialogue with the CC and the authors.

Review process

1. Informal review of the Zero-Order-Draft (ZOD): The ZOD circulates within the project team with the aim of reviewing it in its entirety and paying attention to interfaces between the chapters and identifying cross-cutting topics. The Informal Review is intended to ensure the coherence of the report from the outset.

2. Review of the First-Order-Draft (FOD): The FOD circulates within nominated experts (= selected scientists). The aim is to sift through this and ensure that the breadth of scientifically relevant literature (peer-reviewed and grey literature) as well as all relevant scientific areas are taken into account.

3. Review of the Second-Order Draft (SOD): The SOD circulates within nominated experts (= selected, international, German-speaking scientists) with the aim of reviewing them and ensuring that the breadth of scientifically relevant literature (peer-reviewed and grey literature) is taken into account. Ensuring that relevant scientific areas are taken into account.

4. Review by review editors: Review editors (international experts) review the implementation and incorporation of the comments from the second review in the final report.

The first informal review of the Zero Order Draft has been completed at the end of 2022. A total of 39 reviewers from the AAR2 author team and 12 external experts have reviewed and commented on the ZOD. The comments were incorporated into the report by the author team.

The review of the First-Order-Draft has been completed at th end of 2022.

The review of the Second-Order-Draft is planned for June/July 2024.
